SINGAPORE’S SHOPEE DISRUPTS THE BRAZIL’S E-COMMERCE SECTOR
Shopee took just two years to become Brazil’s most downloaded shopping app, winning users to its low-cost marketplace. The startup’s timing was fortuitous, launching in Brazil just as the COVID-19 pandemic drove consumers away from physical stores, pushing up 2020 e-commerce sales by 44% to $42 billion.
Shopee’s early surge highlights the space left for foreign entrants to grow in the Brazilian sector.
GOOGLE PLAY APP STORE REVENUE ANNOUNCED FOR THE FIRST TIME
Google generated $11.2 billion in revenue from its mobile app store in 2019, according to a court filing unsealed on Saturday, offering a clear view into the service's financial results for the first time. The figures include sales of apps, in-app purchase and app store ads.
The company mentioned it is possible that Google abuses its alleged monopoly in app sales for Android devices.

APPLE WILL ASK BEFORE IT TARGETS YOU WITH ITS ADS IN IOS 15
Apple will start asking for permission to enable Personalized Ads in iOS 15, the company’s method of serving relevant ads in the App Store and Apple News by analyzing what you read, purchase, and search for on your device. The company used to collect that information by default, but now it plans to ask for permission.
MALAYSIA LEADS SOUTH-EAST ASIA IN DIGITAL CONSUMPTION
Malaysia leads the Southeast Asian region with the highest percentage of digital consumers (88% or 22 million people) and where 90% of consumers are expected to be digital by the end of 2021, according to Facebook and Bain & Company.
Moreover, according to the poll, Malaysia digital spending per person is up 47% compared to last year, with overall e-commerce sales set to further increase by 1.3 times by 2026.
TOP INDIAN PAYMENTS APP PHONEPE OPENS ITS DATA FIREHOSE TO EVERYONE
PhonePe, one of the largest digital payments services in India, launched Pulse, a free product to offer insights into how people in the world’s second-largest internet market are paying digitally.
The new product offers a range of granular data, including how many of its transactions in a state were made between users, to merchants, and to pay utility bills. The users’ data is anonymized.
TELEGRAM STARTED TESTING ADVERTISING MESSAGES
The team of the popular messenger Telegram has begun testing beta versions of the next major update – Telegram 8.0. One of the innovations is advertising messages.
In Telegram, there is now a test advertising post marked as ‘Sponsored’. Such posts will only appear in public chat rooms the owners of which will join the program.
